Why copywriting is like walking on the Wales Coastal Path

A few days ago I embarked on a year-long walking challenge. I intend to cover roughly 270 miles of the Wales Coastal Path from South East to South West Wales.

I have no idea how I will manage it. The logistics of it are fairly complex to navigate. Especially for a single mother with limited time available to walk. Particularly when some parts of the walk are a couple of hours drive away.

And with sparse public transport links to get me from the end of the walk back to my car, there is going to be a lot that needs to be worked out to achieve my goal.

But today I started. I walked the first 6 miles.

And today, that’s all that counts.

I don’t need to know yet how I will manage the more difficult parts of the challenge. I needed to start.

But I do need to look research, and find solutions to help me further along my challenge. I will need to speak to people with experience. Read guides. Make plans and change plans as routes and weather changes.

But I needed to start.

Copywriting is like this.

You just need to start. You might need to do some research, ask questions, find solutions, play with ideas and edit shitty first drafts.

But you need to start.

  • You need to contact that first client to ask for a voice of customer interview…
  • You need to start investigating social media groups where your ideal client is…
  • You need to start review mining and doing other online customer research…
  • And when the research is done, you need to write first word on the page. You can ‘edit in the awesome’ later. Just get words down for now.

What do you need to just start today?
