Why copywriting is the best career for my ADHD Brain
I’ve wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. But I thought it was for ‘other people’, and never pursued it.
When I took Tracy Otsuka’s ‘Your ADHD Brain is A-OK’, creativity, writing, storytelling, connection and living to my potential came up as top values and skills for me.
As I pondered this, I saw that my favourite part of the jobs I have done was when I got to write.
I was finally able to call myself a writer.
Copywriter came harder for me. I get a bit sweaty at the thought of sales, a hangover from a very bad sales job I had when I was 19. And copywriting is about getting the outcome. The sale.
But as I learned about it, I learned that it’s not about ‘getting the sale at any costs’.
It’s about putting the product in front of the people who need it, and helping them make a decision about it. Making the sale to the right people.
It’s about connection and empathy. You can’t ethically sell to someone without knowing that you’re helping them. Understanding their problems, getting to know them, connecting with them at an emotional level.
Through copywriting, I get to use my creativity and love of learning to connect with others, help them live to their potential and achieve freedom from the problem they are looking to solve.
Far from being the sweat-inducing sales work I’d imagined it to be, it’s a service that allows me to live to my values and work with my highest skills.
This is the sweet spot for most of us, but especially ADHD brains. When the work we do meets our values and skills, we can fly!
Are you working in your values and skills?
